Strategic partnership with Kiwa strengthens cybersecurity at Nij Smellinghe Hospital

Nij Smellinghe Hospital in Drachten and Kiwa have been working closely together for many years on quality and safety and in the field of information security and cybersecurity. What started with certification and audits has evolved into a strategic partnership focused on continuous learning, joint thinking and ongoing improvement. In this video, employees of Nij Smellinghe explain how they experience the collaboration with Kiwa and what the strategic partnership means in practice for healthcare, quality and cybersecurity.

Cybersecurity plays a crucial role in the healthcare sector. Medical devices are increasingly connected to the internet, and patient data must be protected at all times. Together with Kiwa, Nij Smellinghe therefore looks beyond standards and audits alone. There is room for reflection on day-to-day practice, as well as for testing both policies and technologies.

Employees from various disciplines within Nij Smellinghe do not experience audits as an obligation, but as an opportunity to learn and further improve their work. Through, among other things, combined audits for ISO 9001 and NEN 7510 and an open collaboration around new technologies, an efficient and future-oriented approach to safety emerges—one from which both Nij Smellinghe and Kiwa learn and benefit.

Digital pre-registration with eLicense

With eLicense, Nij Smellinghe Hospital has fully digitalised patient pre-registration. Information such as identification details, documents and consents is securely stored in a personal digital wallet on the patient’s smartphone. This solution is based on international standards for digital identity (ISO 18013-5) and uses strong encryption. Via a single secure QR code, the hospital can retrieve the required data directly and reliably, without paper forms or manual data entry. This ensures that healthcare professionals always have access to up-to-date, validated information, while patients retain control over their own data. The Kiwa eWallet acts as a secure digital vault for sharing sensitive information.
